2006 Winner Adam Christensen
Adam has been involved with the AmeriCorps program of Utah Conservation Corps dedicated to improving public lands and the communities surrounding them. During Adam’s term of service, he has focused on founding the Aggie blue Bikes Program. Adam is now a full-time Utah State University Engineering major and has been part of a coalition of USU students, staff, and faculty that has recently changed campus walkway policy to be more pedestrian and bicycle friendly. This allowed for Adam to start the Aggie Blue Bikes program as an AmeriCorps member of the UCC. Adam spearheaded the effort to gather low-cost and donated bicycles which he repaired and checked out to students free of charge. He has been involved in multiple fundraising efforts that substantially increased the reach and sustainability of this program. Since its inception in September 2005, Aggie Blue Bikes has loaned 15 bicycles to twenty-four USU students who have ridden 1590.5 miles. Looking at it from the environmental standpoint … as Adam would, this has resulted in preventing 1717 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted, an admirable statistic considering Cache Valley has recently experienced some air quality woes. In April, Adam organized the first annual Cache Valley Bike Festival attracting over one hundred participants who learned more about safe cycling. Adam has been recognized by the Utah State University Statesman as Student of the Year for his service with the Aggie Blue Bikes program. Adam will continue his efforts with the Aggie Blue Bikes and the coordination of this summer’s Youth Conservation Corps now as a staff member of the Utah Conservation Corps. Adam is a model citizen, deeply concerned about social and environmental problems. His leadership and commitment have made a meaningful impact.
