After three and a half years of being closed for renovation the Utah State Capitol will be opening again to the public! The Capitol has been seismically retrofitted and restored to the original architect’s specifications. In order to celebrate this event, the Capitol Preservation Board has planned a week-long open house. Thousands are expected to attend and reacquaint themselves with the Capitol and take part in the events that will take place during the week. There are many exciting volunteer opportunities that are available for groups and individuals. We hope you will volunteer and take part in this historic event.

Volunteer Service Description

There are a number of tasks that the volunteers will be responsible for during the open house. For the most part, all volunteers will provide the same service, though there will be some variation. Here is a list of the basic duties and other information that volunteers will be expected to fulfill during their time at the Capitol.

  • Help the public as they enter and exit the building as well as at various points of interest. Points of interest include:
    • Gold Room
    • Senate Chambers
    • House Chambers
    • Supreme Court
    • 4th floor Gallery
    • Rotunda
  • Each volunteer will serve at three locations during their 3½ hour shift. One of which will be outside, assisting with parking/shuttles and directing visitors to the Capitol. The remaining two slots will be spent at two different locations inside the capitol. This will help to give all volunteers a well rounded experience.
  • Cards containing interesting facts about the points of interest will be handed out at the beginning of each volunteer shift. They are encouraged to engage the visiting public and help them learn more about the Capitol.
  •  As volunteers are representing the Capitol, they are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Every volunteer is required to sign the Code of Conduct which will be provided at the beginning of their shift. To view the Code of Conduct (click here).
  • All volunteers must submit the following document(s) prior when they report to volunteer:
    • Volunteer Rights, Waiver and Release Agreement (click here).A copy of this document will be provided at the Capitol for each volunteer to sign.
    • Informed Consent For Minors Agreement (click here) . Any volunteer who is 16-17 years old must print out this form and have their parent's consent by signing this form prior to arriving at the Capitol. This form MUST be brought with to the event SIGNED by the parent.

      Dress Code for Volunteering

As the volunteers will be the representatives to the public for this event we are requiring volunteers to dress in a similar manner.
*The dress code is strictly enforced as you are representatives for the Capitol. Please be sure to where dark pants/skirt and a white solid (no print) top.

      • Men are requested to wear a plain white button-up shirt and dark slacks.
      • Women are requested to wear a white blouse with a dark skirt or slacks
      • As one hour of the shift will be spent outside we encourage all volunteers to bring warm clothing. A room will be provided to leave only your jackets while you are volunteering inside. Please leave purses and other items you don't want left unattended in a secure place or don't bring them. We highly recommend bringing the following items:
        • Warm Coat
        • Sturdy shoes with good tread
        • Gloves
        • Hat

We hope that you will take this spectacular opportunity to volunteer and help us showcase our historic Capitol building.
